Using the Line 2 option card on a LP-3

Introduction:

The purpose of this article is to provide an in-depth explanation about how to properly configure the LINE 2 option cards on your LP-3 processor.

Configuration steps:

Listed below are the correct steps needed in order to correctly configure your LP-3 for use for the LINE 2 option card. 

1. To correctly setup your LP-3, please ensure you have installed the LINE 2 option card onto port 3 of the processor module. 





2. Open Toolbox 32, and create a new site called "LP3 LINE".  






3. Configure the system parameters and change the RTU type.





4. Setup the port 3 for your LINE 2 option card. Please ensure that you select the baud rate as 1200 and have the Pre/Post Tx as 300/100 respectively. 







5. Setup a route to another RTU which can be done by adding a networking link to the target RTU address via port 3, this can be done by configuring the LINE 2 in the "network list" option on toolbox 32. For the IP address, just leave as default value. 




You can now program the logic so that we can communicate with the other RTU using the LINE-2 option card on port 3. 


Logic Example:

Ensure you have configured the LP-3's with the listed configuration above.

To configure your LP-3 to act as a master, it will require programmed logic in order to function correctly. 

Below is the ladder logic required, it will attempt to poll the other LP-3, if it isn't busy, every 10 seconds. In your configuration, please ensure that you change the target RTU address as it may be different. 



Testing the poll:

To test that your configuration has been correctly been setup, you can attempt to poll an LP-3 in a master to outstation network using the LINE-2 option card. 

You are required to setup another LP-3 as the outstation with configuration steps being the exact same as above, except there is no ladder logic and the RTU address must be different. 

Once you have configured both of your LP-3's, ensure that they are both connected via cable to each other respective LINE 2 option cards. Then let the master LP-3 poll the outstation LP-3. (Cable specifications are listed in the diagram below)



We can verify the communication between these two devices by using the Comms Analyzer in toolbox 32. 



The comms analyser shows the communication coming out of the main LP3. You can see that it is sending a poll message to the other LP3 and it receiving a response.  

This example demonstrates basic polling operation of the LINE 2 option card between two LP3's. If your configuration utilizes radio connections to your LINE 2 card, this your configuration will need to be calibrated to reflect that type of configuration.
